SWF Statements Delivered During 64th UN COPUOS Legal Subcommittee

The 64th Session of the Legal Subcommittee (LSC) of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN COPUOS) is meeting in Vienna from May 5 to 16, 2025. The session brings together representatives from Member States, international organizations, and non-governmental observers to discuss the development of space law and legal mechanisms for peaceful, sustainable space activities.

Secure World Foundation (SWF) participated in the meeting in its observer role and contributed both a formal statement and a conference room paper.

SWF Director of Legal Affairs and Space Law, Christopher Johnson, delivered a statement under Agenda Item 4: Information on the Activities of International Intergovernmental and Non-governmental Organizations Relating to Space Law, highlighting the Foundation’s recent work in advancing the dialogue around the governance of space activities, as well as ongoing efforts to improve transparency and legal certainty in multilateral forums.

In addition, SWF submitted a conference room paper titled Universalisation of the UN Space Treaties and Trends in COPUOS Membership. The paper explores the growing alignment between COPUOS membership and participation in the five core UN space treaties and provides visual analysis of treaty adoption trends across Member States.
