Wednesday, March 8, 2023
The Global Expert Group on Sustainable Lunar Activities (GEGSLA) has published The Recommended Framework and Key Elements for Peaceful and Sustainable Lunar Activities. The document was officially released at a side event at the 60th meeting of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space Scientific and Technical Subcommittee (UN COPUOS STSC) on February 9, 2023. The Recommended Framework is the result of a two-year consensus discussion amongst lunar stakeholders in lunar activities, including representatives from space agencies/government, industry, international organizations, academia and civil society from 23 countries. It is intended as a starting point for a conversation on lunar coordination, and covers a range of topics covering: information sharing; safe operations and lunar environmental protection; compatibility and interoperability; lunar governance; benefits for humanity; and sustaining the lunar economy. SWF Director of Private Sector Programs Ian Christensen served as a Member of the Group, and SWF was a sponsor of GEGSLA.
