SWF Statement Regarding Canada’s Commitment not to Conduct Kinetic ASAT Tests
Monday, May 9, 2022
Today, Canada announced that it is joining the United States in committing not to undertake kinetic anti-satellite tests that generate debris. As the world has seen, these tests can produce hundreds or even thousands of pieces of debris, which pose a threat to all operators in nearby orbits. The Secure World Foundation, therefore, welcomes this commitment by Canada, a country that has never carried out such a test and, as they said today, never will. SWF joins Canada and the United States in calling other countries to adopt a similar commitment, helping to cement this initiative into a global norm.
