A Technical Overview of the Satellite Dashboard Tool for Monitoring Close Approaches in Space

In January 2022, SWF publicly released the Satellite Dashboard, an online tool designed to help improve transparency and monitoring of close approaches in space. The tool was co-developed by SWF, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and the University of Texas at Austin under a grant provided by the Smith Richardson Foundation. To help provide more insight into the  development and operation of the Dashboard, SWF Director of Program Planning Dr. Brian Weeden co-authored along with Dr. Moriba Jah and Nevan Simone from UT-Austin a new paper that was recently published in the Journal of Space Safety Engineering. The paper discusses the impetus for the Dashboard, the development process, and the underlying data sets and algorithms that are used to produce its results.
