Space Weather Community Convenes to Review Benchmarks and Connect Across the Federal Government

Monday, September 30, 2019

On September 26, SWF partnered with U.S. Department of State to host the 2019 Space Weather as a Global Challenge event. This evening panel discussion and reception followed the Next Steps Space Weather Benchmarks Town Hall organized by the Science and Technology Policy Institute and sponsored by NASA and NSF. Town hall participants provided input on the 2018 Space Weather Benchmarks, a process to develop initial characterizations of 1-in-100-year and theoretical maximum events for five space weather phenomena.

The evening panel discussion featured an overview of the benchmarks process, the national security implications of space weather resilience, Congressional legislative efforts related to space weather, and the European Union's space weather programs and partnership opportunities. Speakers and the audience also engaged in considerations of commercial space weather data, space situational awareness, and end-user perspectives.
