SWF Project Manager Laura Delgado López was invited to speak about the opportunities and challenges of small satellites during the Workshop on the Impact of New Technologies on Strategic Stability held July 30-31, in Monterey, California. Organized by the Program on Strategic Stability Evaluation (POSSE) and hosted by the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS), the workshop brought together a diverse group of experts to discuss advances in the fields of biotechnology, space, and information technology in the context of strategic stability.

Ms. Delgado López talked about the key benefits expected from the growing proliferation of smallsats particularly for Earth observations, and the policy and regulatory challenges that arise from this trend. She noted several ongoing multi-stakeholder efforts to understand and address these challenges, which include the potential for growth in space debris, and data access policies that may limit the ability of users to extract valuable information from these new sources of data.
