Tuesday, June 23, 2015
SWF Technical Advisor gave an invited presentation on the issue of space debris and the potential challenges from cubesats at a meeting of the National Research Council (NRC) Committee on Achieving Science Goals with Cubesats.
The Committee is investigating the potential of CubeSats as platforms for obtaining high priority science data including, but not limited to, the priority science challenges identified in (a) recent NRC decadal surveys in astronomy and astrophysics, Earth science, planetary science, and solar and space physics (heliophysics) and (b) the science priorities identified in the 2014 NASA Science Plan.
Mr. Weeden's presentation provided a brief overview of the space debris problem from a technical, legal, and policy perspective, and discussed the specific challenges posed by the increasing numbers of cubesats being launched into orbit.
