2011 IAA Planetary Defense Conference

When: Monday, May 9, 2011

to Thursday, May 12, 2011

Where: Bucharest, Romania

Organzied by the IInternational Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and sponsored in part by SWF, the 2011 Planetary Defense Conference (PDC) is the fourth in a series of international conferences to discuss the threat of asteroid and comets to the Earth and potential responses.  Previous planetary defense conferences were held in 2004 in Los Angeles, 2007 in Washington, D.C., and in 2009 in Granada, Spain.

The 2011 PDC focuses on moving from defining and understanding the threat posed by Near Earth Objects (NEOs) to outlining steps for action.  This includes proposals for monitoring and warning networks, potential technologies and techniques for deflecting NEOs on a collision course with Earth, disaster management and response, and international cooperation and coordination.  SWF Technical Advisor Brian Weeden will be co-chairing a paper session on "Legal and Policy Frameworks for Planetary Defense".

The 2011 PDC is open to the public and includes a special student session.
