SWF Executive Director Peter Martinez participated in a panel with other representatives of civil society at the recent open-ended intersessional informal consultative meeting of the United Nations Group of Governmental Experts (GGE) on the Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space (PAROS), held at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Created pursuant to UNGA Resolution 72/250, the United Nations established this GGE with a mandate “to consider and make recommendations on substantial elements of an international legally binding instrument on the prevention of an arms race in outer space, including, inter alia, on the prevention of the placement of weapons in outer space.” The UN GGE on PAROS is comprised of 25 Governmental Experts appointed from governments from around the world. It operates by consensus, and is meeting March 18-29 at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. The GGE on PAROS is expected to submit its final report to the United Nations General Assembly this fall, and to the Conference on Disarmament next year.
