Insurance and Responsible Behavior in Space Event Report

Tuesday, April 3, 2018

The Stimson Center and SWF have released a summary of the discussions that took place at the event, "Insurance and Responsible Behavior in Space," on January 22, 2018. The day-long event brought together experts from multiple fields related to the satellite and insurance industries. As the commercial space sector grows rapidly, and legal issues surrounding fault and liability are unclear, is it possible for space insurers to moderate the behavior of satellite operators?

The participants were able to determine that space insurers would like to promote better behavior, but are limited by price competition, anti-trust regulation, and a flood of capital in the space insurance market. Further details are available in the not-for-attribution report found here.
