AL-2-COPUOS-2013

The fifty-sixth session of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space was held from 12-21 June 2013 at the United Nation Office in Vienna. As every year SWF had a strong participation in various working groups, expert groups and overall discussions.

On Monday, June 17th, SWF Brussels Office Director Agnieszka Lukaszczyk gave a statement to the Subcommittee on behalf of SWF.

SWF Senior Advisor Ray Williamson also attended the meeting to participate in the Action Team-14, which supports the Working Group on Near Earth Objects. Since 2006, SWF has taken an active role in the COPUOS meeting and has also convened several events to support the development of the Action Team report.  Last February, the Action Team report was completed and submitted to the Working Group, whose report was subsequently adopted by the COPUOUS Subcommittee on Science and Technology. The report, which calls for an International Asteroid Warning Network and a Space Mission Planning Advisory Group, has now been approved at the June meeting of COPUOUS and will be sent to the UN General Assembly in October for review and adoption.

Lukaszczyk and Williamson also serve as experts in the Expert Groups of the Working Group on the Long Sustainability of the Space Activities.
