SWF Washington, DC Office Seeking Part-time Short-term Assistant
 SWF is looking for a motivated candidate to support SWF’s 2022 Summit for Space Sustainability. The Summit for Space Sustainability is a high-level, multi-day event focused on developing solutions for space sustainability, hosted by the Secure World Foundation. It is intended to be an in-person event in June 2022.

This position reports to Krystal Azelton, Director of Space Applications Programs. Please click here for the full job description. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

The Urgency to Act on Space Traffic Management 
SWF partnered with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) to hold a virtual panel discussion on why it's critical for the United States to continue efforts to implement space traffic management (STM). The expert panel, led by SWF Director of Program Planning Brian Weeden, highlighted the need to continue moving civil space situational awareness capabilities from the Department of Defense to the Office of Space Commerce (OSC) in the Department of Commerce, to elevate OSC out of its current position within the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), give OSC Mission Authorization authority to provide oversight of new and emerging commercial space activities, and properly resource and fund OSC's efforts.

SWF Guides Discussions on Lessons Learned from Commercial OOS, Right of Way, Multilateral Norms, and Building Trust and Transparency at 2021 AMOS Conference
For the ninth year, SWF staff contributed to the annual Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance Technologies (AMOS) Conference, which was held in a hybrid format on Sept. 15-17, 2021. SWF helped organize and actively participated in the Policy Forum held at the beginning of each day of the conference, which consisted of a keynote speaker followed by a panel discussion on a policy topic related to space situational awareness (SSA), and also organized a side event, the AMOS Dialogue, to discuss issues related to SSA data sharing. SWF Co-Organizes Space Security Conference
SWF was pleased to co-organize with the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) the 2021 Outer Space Security Conference, OS21. This two-day hybrid flagship event provided a unique forum for the Geneva-based diplomatic community—as well as visiting experts from military, industry and academic backgrounds—to jointly consider challenges related to security in outer space and to exchange ideas regarding solutions. SWF Washington Office Director Victoria Samson moderated a panel on space threats and challenges, while SWF Director of Strategic Partnerships and Communications Daniel Porras led a discussion on verification mechanisms and how technology can aid in ensuring compliance with space security regulation. CONFERS Holds 2021 Global Satellite Servicing Forum
SWF, through its role as part of the Secretariat for the Consortium for Execution of Rendezvous and Servicing Operations (CONFERS), helped to organize the 2021 Global Satellite Servicing Forum (GSSF), the 4th in an annual series. The GSSF, under the theme of “Building the Infrastructure for a Thriving In-space Ecosystem,” was an online forum that discussed the technical, business, and policy trends and developments that are driving the emergence of a commercial on-orbit satellite servicing industry. Through a series of presentations, panels, and discussion sessions, the GSSF highlighted the activities across the globe that are advancing the development of satellite servicing capabilities. Executive Director Peter Martinez presented an invited talk on the rationales and modalities of international space cooperation and chaired a panel discussion on regional space cooperation in the 2021 APSCO/ESA/CISL Space Law Workshop, held as a hybrid event in Sanya, China.

Ian Christensen Discusses Need for Space Traffic Management at Bloomberg Radar 2021
SWF Director of Private Sector Programs Ian Christensen discussed the need for revised approaches to commercial space regulation and policy as part of a panel discussion at the Bloomberg Asia Radar 2021 event. Mr. Christensen highlighted the need for global attention to regulatory and policy updates for space traffic management and space safety in the context of a more active space domain. The panel was moderated Regional Head of Exchange Data & Business - South Asia for Bloomberg and also included as speakers Anthony Murfett, Deputy Head of the Australian Space Agency and Masa Ishida.

Chris Johnson Explains Legal Aspects of Space Debris 
SWF Space Law Advisor Chris Johnson participated in “Conversations For The Future : Space Garbage, Recycling, & Sustainability,” hosted by Foundation for the Future. 
Mr. Johnson presented on fundamental norms regarding space debris and also served in a panel discussion with George Nield and Pete Garretson.

Victoria Samson Speaks About Operators and Space Sustainability
SWF Washington Office Director Victoria Samson participated in a virtual panel hosted by the Commercial Smallsat Spectrum Management Association (CSSMA), held on Sept. 10, 2021 in conjunction with the Satellite2021 conference. The panel, "Small Satellite Sustainability from Earth to Space and Beyond,” covered best practices, regulatory standards, debris, and the technical design and mission operational considerations, and/or strategies operators can take to make the space environment more sustainable and included Mike Lindsay of Astroscale and Bruce Yost of NASA Ames Research Center as panelists. Additionally, the conversation was led by former SWF intern and current Astroscale Space Policy Research Analyst Luc Riesbeck.

Dr. Martinez participated in the first assembly for The Off-World Approach, hosted by the Hague Institute for Global Justice. The Off-World Approach aims to provide a platform for the exchange of views on the future of the space enterprise, and for developing and advocating for practical solutions that make the space enterprise meaningful to everyday life around the globe.

Space Sustainability Introduced at GreenBiz Webinar
Mr. Christensen spoke as part of the Sustainability in Space: The Next Frontier webinar hosted by Rubicon and GreenBiz, along with Chris Blackerby, Chief Operating Officer for Astroscale. The webinar provided a broad overview of space sustainability and space debris management challenges, and discussed ways in which broader public and business-sector awareness of these challenges might contribute towards developing solutions.

SWF Staff Discuss Social Benefits of Large Constellations
Director of Space Application Programs Krystal Azelton participated in a discussion titled "Social Benefits of Large LEO Constellations" at the Small Payload Rideshare Association Symposium on September 21, 2021. Moderated by Torsten Kriening from SpacewatchGlobal, this panel included remarks from David Hartshorn from Geeks without Frontiers and Therese Jones from the Satellite Industries Association on the value of rural connectivity. They also considered potential challenges to realizing these benefits.
