Getting Serious About Commercial Satellite Servicing

Tuesday, October 19, 2021

In a new article for the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), SWF Director of Program Planning Dr. Brian Weeden argues that it's time for governments to get serious about the emerging commercial satellite servicing second. To date, many of the discussions on commercial satellite servicing have focused on the dual-use nature of the technology as potential to be used as weapons, but Dr. Weeden argues that it is time to move past those theoretical discussions and instead start focusing on how to enable commercial satellite servicing to happen in a safe, transparent, and sustainable manner. A big part of this includes governments putting in place the national policy and regulatory frameworks to oversee and enable commercial satellite servicing as well as developing international norms and standards. The full article can be found on the ORF website here.
