New Research on Moving Towards a Decentralized Approach for SSA Data Sharing

Thursday, September 16, 2021

SWF Director of Program Planning Dr. Brian Weeden co-authored a new paper presented at the Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance Technologies (AMOS) Conference last month in Maui, HI. The paper talks about the importance of improving space situational awareness (SSA) data sharing among all space actors as part of enhancing the long-term sustainability of space activities, and discusses why shifting to a decentralized space information sharing infrastructure to provide trusted and symmetric space-related data could help meet those goals. The paper explores the shortcomings of the current centralized models for SSA data sharing and how technologies like blockchain can help build trust. The co-authors on the paper were Harvey Reed and Nathaniel Dailey from MITRE and Ruth Stilwell from Aerospace Policy Solutions, LLC.
