Regional Workshop on the Long-Term Sustainability of Space Activities

Sponsored by the Secure World Foundation (SWF), in collaboration with the Central American Association for Aeronautics and Space (ACAE), and with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica, this two-day workshop held in San Jose, Costa Rica, engaged representatives from the Group of Latin American and Caribbean (GRULAC) countries who are members of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS). This workshop served as a platform to advance regional space sustainability discussions within Latin America. From Response to Resilience: Space and Disaster Risk Management

During this year's 31st Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, CO, SWF co-hosted with the Space Foundation a  panel which examined the role space capabilities can play in disaster risk management. The panelists discussed how information derived from space has played a critical role in providing information to policy makers and first responders during times of natural disasters. Bringing Space Down to Earth

SWF Team members contributed to the recently released New World Economic Forum report on the role space plays in addressing challenges on Earth. Report of SWF-supported Capacity-building Workshop in South Africa now Available

As a member of the Working Group on Capacity-Building and Data Democracy (WGCapD) of the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites, SWF supported a WGCapD-organized capacity-building workshop on flood modeling. The report describes the background of the multi-partner effort and includes highlights from the March workshop. Hosted by the South African National Space Agency, the workshop involved 25 participants from six countries in the South African region. Chris Johnson Announces Handbook for New Actors In Space at UNCOPUOS

Mr. Johnson announced SWF's initiative to develop a handbook for new actors in space at the Legal Subcommittee for UNCOPUOS.The handbook will provide a broad overview of the fundamental principles, laws, norms, and best practices for peaceful, safe, and responsible activity in space. SWF Project Manager Laura Delgado López joined NOAA Satellite Conference Panel

Ms. Delgado López joined the “Frequency Matters” panel at the 2015 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Satellite Conference in Greenbelt, Maryland. The conference attracted a large international audience of users and providers of satellite data and information products. Ms. Delgado López spoke about the use of NOAA direct broadcast data in Latin America and discussed potential impacts in the event of interference in the spectrum bands most commonly used to share weather data and related applications.
