SWF Releases Updated Fact Sheet on Chinese ASAT Testing in Space

Monday, May 18, 2015

SWF has released an updated fact sheet on Chinese anti-satellite (ASAT) testing in space. The fact sheet provides an overview of what is known and what is theorized about China’s ASAT testing in space based on publicly-available information.

This update includes more details on the May 2013 ASAT test, which may have tested a capability that could reach satellites in geostationary Earth orbit (GEO). It also includes details provided by the U.S. government on another test conducted July 2014 ASAT test, which appears to be of a capability that could reach low Earth orbit (LEO).

The 2014 test brings the number of known or suspected Chinese ASAT tests in space since 2005 to seven, although only one test produced significant amounts of orbital debris.
