Secure World Foundation Selects Peter Martinez as Its Next Executive Director
SWF President and co-founder Cynda Collins Arsenault announces that Peter Martinez, PhD has been selected by the Board of Directors as the Foundation’s next Executive Director, taking office on October 1, 2018, and succeeding Michael Simpson, PhD, who has served as Executive Director since 2011.

Dr. Martinez brings a multidisciplinary background to SWF with over 20 years of experience in leadership, management, education and scientific research, as well as international engagement encompassing capacity-building and workforce development, strategic planning, multilateral space diplomacy, space policy formulation and implementation, and the regulation of space activities. Dr. Martinez joins SWF from Cape Town, South Africa, where he has coordinated the Space Studies programme at the University of Cape Town since 2014 while also serving on several international  working groups and committees. From 2010 - 2015, he was the Chairman of the South African Council for Space Affairs. In June 2018, he concluded his service to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, where he served as the chair for 8 years for its Working Group on the Long-term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities.

Secure World Foundation Welcomes Luc Riesbeck
SWF is pleased to announce than Luc Riesbeck is joining the team as a fall intern this month. Mx. Riesbeck will work with Director of Space Application Programs Krystal Wilson on the Human and Environmental Security initiative, which promotes improved governance and cooperation in the delivery and use of information derived from space systems. Mx. Riesbeck's project, which will be carried out in partnership with the Big South Data Innovation Hub, is helping to develop an overview and case studies booklet on Earth observation and citizen science. Please join us in welcoming them to SWF!

SWF Co-Hosts Event on Careers in Space Policy
SWF co-hosted with Young Professionals in Foreign Policy an evening reception that brought together speakers from different backgrounds to discuss their roles and careers in space policy. The speakers at "It's Not Just Rocket Science: Careers in Space Policy" discussed their disparate paths to space policy, with some having a life-long love of space guiding their way, while others came at it by a more circuitous route.

SWF Team Supports the International Space University's 2018 Space Studies Program
Space Law Advisor Chris Johnson served as Departmental Chair of Space Policy, Economics, and Law at the International Space University (ISU) 2018 Space Studies Program (SSP) in Delft, Netherlands. The 2018 SSP is a nine-week international, interdisciplinary, and intercultural program open to masters and graduate students from around the world, focusing on all aspects of the global space industry. 

Executive Director Dr. Michael Simpson and Director of Private Sector Programs Ian Christensen appeared as a Guest Lecturers in the Management and Business department. Mr Christensen lectured in a session focused on the relationship between Regulation and Innovation, leading the department's students through a case study exercise evaluating a hypothetical start-up company's interaction with it's regulatory environment. Mr. Christensen also participated in several other sessions of the Department. Project Manager Josh Wolny lectured on US national space policy in Mr. Johnson’s department.

First Workshop For the Woomera Manual on the International Law of Military Space Operations Meets in Exeter
The Woomera Manual on the International Law of Military Space Operations held its first workshop in Exeter, the United Kingdom. The workshop brought together a group of international legal experts and technical advisors to discuss how international law applies to military space activities. The workshop is the first in a series to develop a Manual by 2020. Director of Program Planning Brian Weeden is participating in the Woomera Manual as a technical advisor.

SWF Participates in Annual SmallSatellite Conference
The annual SmallSat Conference in Logan, Utah, has become the premier gathering of companies, educators, hobbyists, and governments developing cubesat and small satellite technologies. For the fourth year, SWF had a significant presence at the 2018 SmallSat Conference, which had record participation from over 3,000 people from 42 different countries. Mr. Christensen and Director of Space Applications Programs Krystal Wilson both attended the conference. Mr. Christensen moderated a "CONFERS Open Information Session" as an official conference side event. Ms. Wilson and Mr. Christensen also participated in a meeting of the Commercial Smallsat Spectrum Management Association.

European Center for Space Law Convenes 2018 Summer Course on Space Law and Policy
Mr. Johnson lectured on U.S. Space Policy "Objectives and Development" at the European Centre for Space Law (ECSL) 2018 summer course on space law and policy in Helsinki, Finland. Each year, the ECSL organizes a two-week course on space law and policy for law students and young professionals from within Europe. Topics covered included the basics of international space law, European, Russian and American approaches to national space legislation, large satellite constellations, space traffic management, military activities in outer space, and additional topics.
