SWF 2018 IAC Young Professionals Scholarships Announced
SWF is pleased to announce the recipients of the Young Professionals Scholarship for travel funding to attend and present their papers at the 2018 International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Bremen Germany. Space & Satellite Professionals International Mid-Atlantic Board Elects Krystal Wilson as Director at Large
Director of Space Applications Programs Krystal Wilson has joined the Space & Satellite Professionals International (SSPI) Mid-Atlantic Board as a Director at Large. Her duties involve supporting SSPI educational outreach, membership, fundraising, event planning, governance and programming. Ms. Wilson was welcomed as a new committee member following a membership vote in June 2018 and joins a distinguished group of space and satellite professionals.

Insight - Cubesats and the FCC: The Sky is Not Falling

This August, the CubeSat and smallsat developer and operator community will gather in Logan, Utah for the annual Small Satellite Conference. Organizers are expecting record attendance surpassing the 2,300 people that attended last year’s conference (which itself had record attendance). The growth and energy around the Small Satellite Conference is emblematic of the rapid growth in the use, and utility, of small satellites in today’s space sector. Analysts report that 2017 saw a record number of satellites launched: 466 by one count, a number that included more than 300 satellites smaller than 50 kg in mass. These smaller satellites include CubeSats, or satellites defined in terms of units of 10 cm3 cube form factors (1U, 3U, 6U, etc.). This growth has led to efforts to reform the regulatory structure related to small satellites, efforts which unfortunately have lead to some confusion over licensing frameworks....continue reading.

Space Weather Enterprise Forum 2018
SWF co-sponsored this year's annual forum, organized by the National Space Weather Partnership, focused on infrastructure protection, the underpinnings of observation and research, and improving forecasting of space weather phenomena. Colorado Representative Ed Perlmutter gave the keynote address highlighting the actions of the House Science Committee in approving the Space Weather Research and Forecasting Act just one day before.

SWF Provides Expertise at United Nations Group of Governmental Experts on Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space
Space Law Advisor Chris Johnson served as an expert speaker at the preparatory meeting for the United Nations Group of Governmental Experts (GGE) called for by the UN General Assembly in Resolution 72/250 to "consider and make recommendations on substantial elements of an international legally binding instrument on the prevention of an arms race in outer space." Mr. Johnson spoke to the GGE on the status of norms applicable to international security and the prevention of an arms race in outer space.

Fourth Meeting for the Manual on International Law Applicable to Military Activities in Outer Space Convenes
Mr. Johnson served as an expert and contributor at McGill University’s Institute of Air and Space Law (IASL)’s Fourth Workshop on the Manual on International Law Applicable to Military Activities in Outer Space (MILAMOS) project in Montreal, Canada. MILAMOS is an ongoing project to develop a widely-accepted manual (the McGill Manual) that clarifies the fundamental existing rules applicable to military uses of outer space, by both States and non-State actors in times of peace, in times of rising tensions, and in times of armed conflict.

The Third Annual Space Weather as a Global Challenge Event Highlights Opportunities for Collaboration
Director of Space Applications Programs Krystal Wilson moderated an international panel on space weather challenges at this third annual event. In accordance with the 2015 Space Weather Action Plan goal to increase international cooperation on space weather issues, the U.S. Department of State co-hosted this event with the Embassy of Japan in Washington, DC. International experts from government, academia, the military, and private companies convened to discuss methods of improving knowledge of the Sun and its effects on Earth.

The Pros and Cons of Creating a Space Force
Director of Program Planning Brian Weeden participated in a panel discussion at the Brookings Institution on the proposal for creating a Space Force. Following President Trump's June 18 order to create the Space Force, Brookings fellow and former Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control Frank Rose convened this panel of experts to discuss developments in Congress, the Administration, and Department of Defense.
