Insight - UNCOPUOS and Space Sustainability

United Nations General Assembly Resolution 1348 (XIII) of December 13, 1958, established the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) as the principal international committee to consider humankind’s activities in outer space. First established as an ad hoc committee, COPUOS was made a permanent committee with General Assembly Resolution 1472 (XIV) in 1959. Since the early sixties, COPUOS has met every year, usually alternating between UN Headquarters in New York City and the UN in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1994, COPUOS was moved to the UN in Vienna, Austria, where it has since remained.

Last month in Vienna, COPUOS successfully concluded its 59th annual session.The present seems like an opportune time to consider some current developments from the most recent COPUOS meeting, as well as the Secure World Foundation’s role and approach to this indispensable international forum...continue reading

SWF was a principal co-sponsor of the Prague Security Studies Institute's conference, "Advancing the Trilateral Europe-U.S.-Japan Space Security Partnership." SWF Executive Director Michael Simpson gave opening remarks, moderated the panel on international norms, and spoke in the final panel.

SWF Technical Advisor Brian Weeden served as a member of the organizing committee, and co-chaired a session on detecting space debris and operational collision avoidance at the 4th International Space Debris Mitigation and Remediation Workshop, hosted by the French Space Agency in Paris, France.

Ian Christensen presents at the 7th joint meeting of The Space Resources Roundtable and the Planetary & Terrestrial Mining Sciences Symposium
SWF Project Manager Ian Christensen gave a presentation entitled "The Policy Context for Space Resources Development" at the 7th joint meeting of The Space Resources Roundtable (SRR) and the Planetary & Terrestrial Mining Sciences Symposium (PTMSS) held June 7-9, 2016 at the Colorado School of Mines, in Golden, CO. The meeting featured discussion of the scientific, engineering, and business objectives and challenges behind current activities in space resources development, including the Moon, Mars, and asteroids. Mr. Brian Weeden participated in the Defence Engagement Program Executive Panel in Ottawa, Canada. Mr. Weeden presented on trends in the space domain, the resulting security challenges, and the ways Canada can help meet those challenges to maintain a safe, secure, and sustainable space environment.

SWF Says Goodbye to Project Manager Laura Delgado López

On July 8, Ms. Laura Delgado López will conclude her tenure at SWF. Ms. Delgado López contributed a great deal to SWF projects and activities, especially the Human and Environmental Security and Latin American Regional Engagement portfolios. We wish her nothing but continued success as she moves on to perform her role as Senior Executive Account Manager, Environmental Solutions, Space and Intelligence Systems at Harris Corporation.
