Last week, SWF, in collaboration with the Central American Association for Aeronautics and Space (ACAE) and with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica, celebrated a two-day workshop in Costa Rica focused on the sustainability of space activities. This workshop served as a platform to advance regional space sustainability discussions within Latin America and examined relevant international efforts, particularly the long-term sustainability (LTS) guidelines effort at the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS).

The invitation-only workshop engaged space policy experts and GRULAC delegates from over 10 countries in an active discussion on how best to address concerns that have been raised in advance of the June 2015 UNCOPUOS debate on the guidelines. Delegates engaged with subject matter experts – Dr. Mazlan Othman, Dr. Sergio Camacho-Lara, Dr. David Kendall, and Ambassador Ciro Arévalo-Yepes – on a series of themes relevant to broader sustainability discussions, such as space and disaster management, and in an active discussion on opportunities for progress in this area. Dr. Othman and Ambassador Arévalo-Yepes serve on the SWF Advisory Committee.

While the discussion portions of the workshop were not for attribution, presentations offered throughout the workshop – including updates on the space developments of some of the countries represented in the workshop – were on the record and are available on our event page. A summary report will be posted soon that captures major themes and other highlights of the event.
