Agnieszka Lukaszczyk Joins the Editorial Review Board of the International Journal of Space Technology Management and Innovation (IJSTMI)

The IJSTMI offers a platform for discussion of space business, innovation, and management, including the advantages of space technology for economic growth, new markets, and applications; space programs management, technology, and innovation; and space-based technology commercialization. IJSTMI also covers space agencies' management programs that encourage space technology innovation, management, and industrialization.

Brussels Forum - SWF Hosts Dinner Discussion on Space and Stability

The Brussels Forum is an annual high-level meeting sponsored by the German Marshall Fund that brings together influential North American and European political, corporate, and intellectual leaders to address pressing challenges currently facing both sides of the Atlantic. The Brussels Forum featured a series of break-out dinners that allowed for more intimate discussions of select issues. SWF sponsored a dinner on "Space and Security" that examined the role space plays in international security and how it affects cooperative efforts of the international community. Moderated by SWF Washington Office Director Victoria Samson, speakers included Ms. Theresa Hitchens, Director, United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research; Ambassador Jacek Bylica, Principal Adviser and Special Envoy for Non-proliferation and Disarmament, European External Action Service; and Dr. Jamie Shea, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Emerging Security Challenges, NATO.

SWF Successfully Co-organizes the UNIDIR Space Conference

This year's conference focused on threats that might give rise to conflict within the outer space domain, how such conflict might spread to other domains and how such threats might be mitigated through national and multilateral initiatives. The event was organized by The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research in collaboration with Chatham House, Secure World Foundation and The Simons Foundation and with support from the governments of the People's Republic of China, India, Japan, the Russian Federation and the United States of America.

SWF Staff Actively Contributes to the 2nd Space Generation Fusion Forum in Colorado Springs

The 2nd edition of the Space Generation Fusion Forum was held in conjunction with the 29th Annual National Space Symposium. The event gathered a select group of 50 standout young adults from various areas of the space sector - government, industry, and academia. SWF staff played many important roles in the Fusion Forum: Project Manager Tiffany Chow was a member of the organizing team; Washington Office Director Victoria Samson served as moderator for the panel discussion on "Long Term Sustainability of Space"; Project Manager Natassa Antoniou served as a panelist for the discussion on "Operational Data Exchange and Sharing of Space Assets"; and SWF Executive Director Michael Simpson and Brussels Office Director Agnieszka Lukaszczyk attended the Forum as special guests.

SWF Co-sponsors Events at the 29th National Space Symposium

SWF partnered with the Space Foundation to co-sponsor the New Generation Space Leaders Program at the 29th National Space Symposium. The program was designed to bring together young professionals and senior leaders, and included workshops, Q&A sessions, speed mentoring, social networking, and receptions. On April 8, SWF co-hosted a New Generation Space Leaders Networking Reception with the Space Foundation.

SWF also co-sponsored a panel discussion on April 11, entitled "Long Term Sustainability of Space - Practices for the Future." Moderated by SWF Executive Director Michael Simpson, panelists represented a wide range of expertise and included: Ambassador Jacek Bylica, Principal Adviser and Special Envoy for Non-proliferation and Disarmament, European External Action Service, European Union; Ms. Kay Sears, President, Intelsat General; Mr. James S. Simpson, Vice President of Business Development, Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems; and Dr. Kazuto Suzuki, Professor of International Political Economy, Hokkaido University, and also an SWF Advisory Committee Member.

SWF Co-sponsors the Planetary Defense Conference

The Planetary Defense Conference (PDC) was held in Flagstaff, Arizona and was co-sponsored by SWF, NASA, ESA, Aerospace Corporation and Northern Arizona University. The main focus of the PDC was sharing recent research on impacts of Near Earth Objects on Earth and how to mitigate the risks of damage. SWF Senior Advisor Ray Williamson, who was one of the conference co-organizers, co-authored a paper with former SWF staff member Leonard David that reviews the public communication challenges of a predicted asteroid impact on Earth. The paper was presented during a session entitled "Consequence Management and Education."  Executive Director Michael Simpson was also in attendance and took part in informal discussions.

Brian Weeden Publishes Op-Ed on Impact of Sequestration on Space Situational Awareness

SWF Technical Advisor Brian Weeden published an Op-Ed in SpaceNews on the real impacts that sequestration will have on U.S. national security space activities. The publication addresses the worrisome realization of these impacts, as well as the issues that U.S. military officials chose to highlight in their campaign against sequestration.

SWF Submits Inputs to the UN's Group of Governmental Experts

SWF has submitted inputs to the United Nation's Group of Governmental Experts (GGE) regarding the importance of Transparency and Confidence-Building Measures (TCBMs) in Outer Space. These inputs are based on activities related to maintaining international peace and security in outer space that SWF has hosted or participated in around the world.

Agnieszka Lukaszczyk Lectures at Leiden University on the Rationale of Having a Space Code of Conduct

SWF Brussels Office Director Agnieszka Lukaszczyk gave a guest lecture on the rationale behind having a space code of conduct to the students in the LLM advanced class of air and space law at Leiden University. The Master's Programme in Air and Space Law is a combination of public air law, private air law and space law, both from an international and European perspective, and is unique in the world.

Natassa Antoniou Lectures on the Role of Space Applications in Cities, Regions to Representatives of the Environmental Protection Bureau (EPB) of the City of Nanjing, P.R. China

SWF Project Manager Natassa Antoniou was invited by the City2020 Foundation to give a lecture in Wageningen, the Netherlands at the "Municipal environmental legislation and technology" course for representatives of the EPB of the City of Nanjing. The course is part of the "Training Course on Urban Environmental Management and Urban Sustainable Development for Environmental Specialists and Urban Managers" project, which municipal staff of the EPB of the Chinese cities of Najing and Kelamay attends every year. Natassa's presentation "Local & Regional Authorities - Going Green... Sustainable... and 'Spacey'?" focused on space applications and how these can support local and regional authorities.

Natassa Antoniou Presents at the Seventh Group of Earth Observation European Projects' Workshop

The Seventh Group of Earth Observation European Projects’ Workshop (GEPW7) brought together interested European stakeholders to present their work related to Earth Observation and to discuss how Europe can contribute to Group of Earth Observation (GEO) and Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) beyond 2015. The GEPW7 was hosted by CREAF (Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications) of the Universitat Autònoma of Barcelona (UAB) in Barcelona, Spain. SWF is an Observer to GEO. Project Manager Natassa Antoniou participated in the workshop and gave a presentation entitled “Global Initiatives of Disaster Management – Where Do We Stand?”

Victoria Samson Presents at the Asan Institute in South Korea

Washington Office Director Victoria Samson gave a presentation entitled “Space Technology and National Security” as part of the Asan Institute for Policy Studies’ Science, Technology, and Security Series of workshops. The day-long workshop was held at the institute in Seoul, South Korea on Tuesday, April 23, and discussed space technology and national security; satellites and international security; policy reviews of space technology development; and Korean perspectives on space technology programs.

Brian Weeden Gives a Lecture on SSA for ISU Executive Space Course

SWF Technical Advisor Brian Weeden gave a guest lecture by WebEx on the topic of Space Situational Awareness (SSA) and its role in space sustainability as part of International Space University's (ISU) Executive Space Course. Held at ISU's main campus in Strasbourg, France, the Executive Space Course provides an overview of space and of space-related subjects for professionals of diverse backgrounds in an interdisciplinary, international and intercultural learning environment.
